Course Overview

Students gain a foundational understanding of how computers and networks actually work from binary/hexadecimal data representation to hardware peripherals, file systems, networking, and cybersecurity. It blends conceptual computer science (how data is stored and machines start up) with practical IT skills (setting up devices, managing files, evaluating software) and security awareness (recognizing and responding to cyber threats). Overall it aims to demystify the systems underlying everyday technology use.

Learning Goals

Students will:
  • Explore how computers represent images, color, sound, and text using binary and hexadecimal number systems.
  • Identify core hardware components - CPU, GPU, RAM, motherboard, and hard drive - and how they work together inside a computer.
  • Trace how data travels across networks, from a school's local network (LAN) out to the wider internet (WAN).
  • Investigate real-world cyberattacks and apply the discover-quarantine-remove process used in incident response.
  • Practice hands-on IT support skills such as file management and security, device setup, and software evaluation, from the perspective of a help desk technician.

CSTA Alignment

Computing Systems is aligned to the CSTA 6-8 and 9-10 Computer Science Standards, providing opportunities for learners in Grades 7-10 to deepen their understanding of computing systems, networks and the internet, data representation, and cybersecurity within our full K-12 computer science curriculum. Lessons and projects foster troubleshooting, critical thinking, and safe, responsible computing practices in line with grade-appropriate CSTA expectations.
