AI Curriculum for Elementary School

A hands-on, story-driven introduction to artificial intelligence, designed for elementary teachers who want to make AI accessible, creative, and responsible.

Get your Elementary Students Started the Right Way

As AI transforms the way we live and learn, it’s essential that students begin developing AI literacy early. Hello World CS helps educators introduce these concepts in meaningful, age-appropriate ways, integrating AI exploration into storytelling, design, and computational thinking.
‍
By connecting imagination to inquiry, students learn to think critically about intelligent systems: what they can do, how they work, and the role humans play in shaping them.

Early AI Literacy

Students build foundational understanding of how AI systems “learn,” how data drives decisions, and where these tools show up in daily life.

Creative Application

Story-based projects allow students to design, prompt, and experiment with AI tools while connecting literacy, art, and technology standards.

No Experience Needed

Designed for real classrooms. Teachers and students dive into AI without any prior experience in coding or computer science, thanks to scaffolded support.

Responsible Use

Age-appropriate discussions introduce fairness, bias, and authorship, helping students see AI as something to question and guide, not just use.

Preparing Young Learners for an
AI-Driven World

The curriculum prepares elementary school students to recognize AI in their environment, analyze how it’s used, and reflect on its impact.

This AI Literacy and Readiness program introduces students to foundational AI concepts through creative projects and storytelling. In these standalone modules, students dive into the world of AI, learning to use AI creatively and responsibly. Students design and implement their own AI-driven block-based programs to build their stories, and become AI Power Users.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about teaching AI literacy in elementary school.
+-

What does AI literacy look like in elementary school?

In elementary grades, AI literacy is about building intuition, not technical depth. Students learn to recognize AI in the world around them, understand that computers "learn" from examples people give them, notice that AI can be wrong, and think about fairness. Hello World introduces these concepts through creative projects and storytelling. In the free AI 360, students generate an AI Skybox, design a 3D scene, and code a character to life—an intro to AI, VR, and programming in one creative session.

+-

Is elementary school too early to teach AI?

No. Young children already interact with AI constantly, and they form beliefs about it early, including the belief that it's always right. Age-appropriate AI literacy gives them a more accurate mental model before misconceptions harden. Hello World's elementary AI projects start in grade 3, building on the computational thinking foundation students get in CS Adventures and CS Breakthroughs. In addition, AI Story Studio teaches AI basics through creative storytelling, with students using AI to generate ideas and then programming AI-enabled characters in virtual worlds. AI 360° is free and has students build virtual worlds with AI. These are all designed for teachers with no AI background and run on standard classroom devices.

+-

Do elementary students use AI tools directly?

Not open commercial tools, which typically have age restrictions that make them inappropriate for elementary students. Hello World's elementary AI projects run inside its own platform with four layers of AI safety built in, so students can learn by doing in a controlled environment. The goal is understanding how AI works, which doesn't require students to have accounts on commercial AI products.

+-

How does elementary AI literacy fit with elementary computer science?

Closely. Both build on computational thinking: patterns, sequences, decomposition, and data. AI concepts like "a computer learns from examples" sit naturally alongside foundational lessons about algorithms and how computers follow instructions. Hello World's elementary computer science curriculum and AI projects share the same block-based platform, so students move between them without learning a new tool.

Who teaches AI literacy in elementary school?

The same people who teach elementary CS: classroom teachers, technology or library media specialists, and STEM teachers. It’s very common for teachers to teach a course with no initial AI background, which is why Hello World's elementary AI projects are designed for teachers in this way, and why every partnership includes professional development with a dedicated PD specialist.
