Large Language Models: Math, Not Magic

In this Hour of AI activity, students pull back the curtain on the inner workings of large language models, developing their basic intuition for how these models understand and generate text. They see first-hand that language models aren't magical—just mathematical!

What is the hour of AI?

The Hour of AI is a global campaign from CSforALL, run in collaboration with Code.org, that invites every student to spend one hour learning how artificial intelligence actually works. It builds on the Hour of Code tradition and runs each year during Computer Science Education Week in December, though any hour, any week works.Hello World’s Hour of AI activity, Large Language Models: Math, not Magic, is a free, one-period lesson for grades 6–12. No prior coding experience, no account, and no prep beyond reading the lesson plan.

Is the Hour of AI free?

Yes. The activity, lesson plan, and teacher slides are free, and students don’t need an account.

What grades is this for?

Grades 6–12. It’s written for middle school and early high school, but older students get plenty out of it.

How long does it take?

One class period, about 60 minutes. The lesson plan includes timing for each phase.

Do students need coding experience?

No. This is an introductory activity with no prerequisites.

What do students need?

A device with internet access, one per student or pair, plus a projector for the teacher. The lesson plan includes an offline alternative if devices are limited.

When is the Hour of AI?

The campaign runs during Computer Science Education Week each December, but you can run this activity any time of year.

What comes after the hour?
